Hi.
Good timing with this question. We actually just learnt about the Vietnam War and this sort of stuff in school. The opposite of communism is Capitalism. Where communism is the theory that we should all be completely equal in all areas including money and monetary gains and values, Capitalism says that we should all have the right to make as much money as we can or want.
Communism assumes total equality. Whereas Capitalism grants us the right to be individual. Capitalism is the current economic and socio-economic theory that the world lives by.
After the threats of Communism were evaded the world settled back into the ways that it had always lived by.
Hope this helps you in some way.

there is no real opposite to communism, it is an economical system that evolves via the events that transpire as other economical systems fail.
Just like there is a cycle to economic systems, there is also one for systems of government.
this is kind of a kookier representation of what i am speaking about, but it is pretty accurate.

but if i had to pick something as an example, that opposes Communism the most, i would have to say policed state oligarchy, which is the next step in economic/government progression after capitalism/democracy, which eventually leads to martial law and anarchy.
during martial law, the bartering system begins to develop and continues through anarchy, when it starts to become communism which eventually comes full swing to free market capitalism and democracy.

Capitalism - Some would say democracy but communism is not a political system. It is an economic system - everything is shared and equal (supposedly). Many communist countries consider themselves democracies.

Capitalism..definitely
Capitalism is basically like the united states it promotes competition and people "stepping" on other people (using each other) in order to get rich. A common pharse used in capitalism is larriez-faire..which means goverment should not get involve in the economic system.
Communism is when the goverment controls everything and basically everyone earns the same amount of money and gets taxed alot in order to provide everyone with health benefits etc etc etc...

If it's communism as an idea, I'd say anarchy.
In the real life, I'd say democracy. Unfortunately, for all the great ideas communists had, in real life they were closer to fascists than any colour of democrats.
If you are yourself a communist, try saying you're a Trotzkyist. They, at least were enever proven wrong by history.

On a Left-Right Model of Politics, Fascism is your answer. However in beliefs on how to run government and economy, I think capitilism is what you want.
