Nowadays my fridge, dryer, car, t.v., etc. break down in a few years whereas my old stuff never broke down. There's all this fancy gadgetry on my dryer, when there should just be one function, which is "Dry". It feels like they add on more useless stuff, but don't know how to get the core of it right.

I agree. My old appliances lasted at least 20 years. My newer ones with all the bells and whistles I could care about barely make it 8-9 years. I'm not happy with my new washer. It stops every time I lift the lid which is probably just a safety feature, but I want to be sure the load is even.

Yep! The manufacturers do it on purpose. So you will have to go back and buy another one and they get the repeat business and you end up spending more $; greedy MF's! It's called "planned obsolescence".
