Poetry, above any other art form, comes closest to fulfulling the goal of art. Art is the representation of the unrepresentable. Through language, space, and metaphor poetry is able to skirt the edges of capturing an ever changing world's beauty and ugliness better than any other artform.

Poetry can and should be an important part of our daily lives. Poems can inspire and make us think about what it means to be a member of the human race. By just spending a few minutes reading a poem each day, new worlds can be revealed.
Poetry is important because it encourages words for sheer beauty.
Poetry is important because it gives angsty teenagers a safe medium with which to express that angst.
Poetry is important because occasionaly large blocks of prose are difficult to read, and therefore poetry can be a useful tool for communicating a message.
I feel like "words to express beauty" and "words to express a message" can't be the same poem, but often they are. While I am not mostly a reader of poetry, I feel that without poetry, literature would be like chicken soup without salt - healthy, but bland.Well, poetry, a voice heard by ears that care, can help. Poetry helps your body release tension...it helps you relax your mind. So, instead of feeling like you are spinning and the world isn't, you can sit back and watch it all.
Another great thing about poetry is how it lets people see through the eyes of anyone...even their so-called "enemy". Poetry puts your observations, opinions, and even train of thought out there. Once people see how you think, they might have a feeling of why ou say what you say, do what you do, or react like you do. This can prevent misunderstandings. Poetry can make it easier to step into the shoes of someone else, which is the key to happiness.

we began with nursery rhymes and songs, even jingles to advertise spider man.
Poetry is art. Art is communication. Communication is essential for life to continue. Another word for communication is intercourse. So the reading and writing of Poetry is very involved with the interplay and dialogue between humans. Without poetry life would be a very long lecture on morality. It is a way for young artists to let off steam and dream without adults becoming too upset. It is a way for an adult
artist to express our madness, our regrets, our desires, aspirations and our belief system. We complain and rag about the state of the planet through the voices of our poets He /she is our way of advising the world. Poets are also teachers and doctors and lawyers and waiters and labourers. Poets are the well and the infirm, Poets speak for the dead. Poets don't cry they bleed. Almost all , maybe all song writers are poets... and we all know music is food. The list is never ending. (I am afraid I am touched, just slightly.) I think I will stop now...

This might be surprising coming from me, but I would ask first "Is poetry important"?
Then, there are two types of possible answers to your question: one which links poetry to emotions and feelings, and the other which is more literary and associates it to research on language, words.
Poetry is important as a literary genre, but not more important than novels are (to me). One of my favourite writers, Witold Gombrowicz, said that poetry is like sugar: you can put some in your coffee, but if you eat spoonfuls of it, it's sickening. So you can, indeed, put poetry in a novel. Poetry is not necessarily just a poem.
Finally, I would say that one of the problems of poetry is poets. People who write poetry sometimes consider themselves endowed with a special something, which is less the case with novelists. I find this tedious, and sometimes I feel like telling them: just go and write, and stop telling us you are a "poet".

Personally, I see poetry ( reading or writing it ) a sanctuary, a haven.
You see, when I write I am whatever I want to be.
Once I'm living amongst poets or be a warrier, a lover, a peasant, a queen.
Also, by poetry, I get much closer to the feeling I crave to sense, like love, joy, grief.. Therefore, I find it soothing and somewhat of a healing method.

Poetry, Literature teach us about life. They say in a fewer words that we can speak, they deliver messages, points of view, comments with words that ignite the mind, imagination even reason in some cases. They make us think in a different way than just simply speaking or talking.

Poetry is a form of art of expressing our emotions and fellings in black and white. It forms a huge aspect of our language and overcomes the barrier of communication for the generations to come.

The story of Francis Farmer and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is important. This is therefore an important tale of rebellion, too.
