As you will have to use public transport for all London Airports, just take the one that has the best connection and times from your nearest airport. It does not make a lot of difference in the price of your ticket which distance you travel. Do not plan to go by taxi, unless you have a company paying, as the distances are big and taxis get in traffic jams all the time.
Both Gatwick and Heatrow have good rail / underground connections. The smaller airports like Stanstead, Luton and city airport have bus and train connections too, but are mainly for European flights.

I do not like Heatrow as it is huge, but it is the best for many destinations.

Use Heathrow or Gatwick, not Stanstead as it's further out. You can get the tube from Heathrow to central London (Picadilly line) and from Gatwick you can get the Gatwick Express (a train) or a bus. Imperial College is in a lovely location is South Kensington and is a very good University to study in.
