Pac-Man..
He was the first "True" video game icon, known all over the world by a much wider range age group than Mario is.
Remember, there were not many video games out in the early 80s..pac-man was new and took off like a rocket. Every decent pizza place, bowling alley, and bar rushed to get the pac-man arcade machine.
Atari had everyone mesmerized and Pac-man holds the world record ( yes, still does ) for being the most played and popular video game of all time.

Pac-Man, it's Company was way out before Mario and you don't usually see Mario in Arcades. You will never get out of an Arcade without seeing a Pac-Man. Also, Pac-Man used to be a TV Show back then and there were a family who was always being chased by the ghosts.
