yes it's cruel.......simply because your sending an animal into and environment they will have absolutely no way of adapting to. Not to mention Laika died out there, alone, scared and cold, and no chewy.

I think sending Laika into space was the single biggest act of selfish cruelty and self-publicity in the entire Russian space program. They sent her up for no reason except that it would give them the 'first' of putting the world's first animal in orbit. The scientific justification is flimsy at best, because much better data could be gathered by bringing the dog back for a thorough examination. They sent Laika into space with absolutely no way of bringing her back, when they could have waited a year to perfect heatshield technology and got a decent set of data just as they did with later animals.

Definitely cruel ! An animal is obviously not in a position to refuse anything that`s done to it ......... the same as a human baby .
Animals feel pain and fear just as much as humans do , so taking total advantage of them simply because they can`t speak is to me unjustifiable cruelty !
Why couldn`t prisoners such as rapists , child molesters and murderers be used for these experiments ? No one except the ACLU and a few crackpots would care about the outcome . And if they died in space , so much the better . We owe them nothing anyways .
Animal experimentation is unnecessary in this day and age , Many companies , hospitals , etc that used to use animals for their experiments have stopped doing so because of both public pressure and new and better ways to test than using animals .

Yes it's cruel, but considerably less cruel than sending a human for the same purpose. Animals were sent out to find out how they died, so they could avoid that fate for humans. You can't really send a human for the same task.
