I'm betting it's the panhard rod..It helps center the rear axle,If one mount is on the rear axle and the other end connects to the chassis. That is what it is. If the bar is connected on both ends to the rear axle Assembly it is what your are calling it.

All you need to repair is a anti-roll bar (sway bar) "link kit" available at any auto parts store. I shopped recently for the same parts and found a genuine TRW kit at Advance Auto Parts. Be sure to shop around for this kit because the price doubles from store to store.

Car Quest has Energy Suspension link kits which are better than most because of the urethane bushings instead of squishy squashy rubber grommets. Be absolutely sure you get the exact length kit as your originals otherwise the maximum twist of the sway bar will suffer. If you dare to upgrade replace the upper sway bar grommets to urethane also. That step will increase roll stiffness.

Definetly sounds like the stabilizer bar to me. Look for stabilizer bar bushings for your car and year, on a site such as autopartswarehouse.com, and see if it looks familiar.
