I have a 1991 Kawaski Vulcan 500. My uncle gave it to me for my graduation. He replaced all of the valves. I rode it on a 100 mile trip last week, and it rode fine. Yesterday it started to make this weird noise, it sounds like air coming out. It sounds normal but with pulses of air. It also seems to have lost a little power. Can anyone tell me what is going on?

Get a section of hose no larger than 1/2 inch diameter. Put one end up to your ear and move the other end around on the engine area until the noise is loudest. It will be pointing at the area where the noise is coming from. I suggest you do this with the engine cold so you don't risk burning your hand.

That will let you know where the air noise is coming from. Fist if it is an intake leak, the noise should be fairly steady. It if is exhaust it will be in spurts or puffs.

Try that and come back to this page with what you have learned.

Your Uncle may have adjusted the valves on the tight side.
After break-in, they got tighter.
Try adjusting the valves again.
