I don't like it when people compare with MJ either. However you didn't explain your gripe with it. Mine is that I think players should have their own name atleast until thety retire. I know older people that hated it when new players that came into the league in the 80's (like MJ) was being copmpared to Dr. J. So I guess it's just a generational thing. Heck, I wish I had a dollar everytime Dwight Howard is compared to Shaq. I doubt he may ever be Shaq.

Their are actually deep physchological reasons behind this.We watch sports so we can see legends born and records broken. Part of the fun is being able to look at the athletes of your generation and trying to show they are better then those of the previous generation. It shows your generations superiority and gives people justification for investing time and money into sports. It make them feel important to think that they are seeing history being made. They also like the debate factor. They like to try to show their right and others are wrong because it makes them feel smart. For instance you yourself are looking to debate this and garner angry reactions. If someone disagrees and posts something that says so it will make you feel good to know your right and they dont know what their talking about. If someone agrees it will give you the instant satisfaction of knowing you created or recreated an idea someone agrees with and therefore likes. Also many people dont actually truly think the players they are comparing (Kobe, Lebron, Wade) are better then MJ but they simply want to make themselves feel basketball is just as good, fun, exciting, entertaining ect. as the glory days of MJ they remember or hear about(rather or not this is true I dont know) so they can feel their lives (a big part of our life is our heroes and those who compare usually idiolize those they are comparing)are worth just as much as they were back in the days of MJ they remember or more then their generational predecessors who tell them stories about MJ and his greatness. We are competetive and we live our sporting dreams (many if us watch because we secretly wish we were the ones out their playing and being worshipped and loved) through our athletes and it makes us feel good to know our player is the best (even though we have nothing to do with it). Another reason is that our lives are a virtually meaningless in the scheme of things fight to survive and it gives us something to do to sit around and compare them. Prices rise and we feel were not getting as much as the fans of MJ's generation did so we want to feel we are so we pretend our athletes are better .They also get so caught up in sports they feel they need to defend their athletes honor. Finally they sometimes feel they are genuinely right and want to say so.

Because they miss the old MJ. They miss that strange mixture of confidence and class. And they're hungry for a championship team that actually has some charisma.
