I was wondering if anyone knew a couple of good books with human and animal friendships? I like those kinds of stories and I was wondering if anyone knew one that wasn't a children's book. I like drama, so if it's not one of those happy ever after tales, I'll be happy. Or, if not, then a friendship between the most unlikely people; or unlikely human and animal.
Thanks!

Call of the Wild by Jack London

"John Thornton - Buck’s final master, a gold hunter experienced in the ways of the Klondike. Thornton saves Buck from death at the hands of Hal, and Buck rewards Thornton with fierce loyalty. Thornton’s relationship to Buck is the ideal man-dog relationship: each guards the other’s back and is completely devoted to the other. The strength of their bond is enough to keep Buck from acting on the forces he feels are calling him into the wild."

P.S. "Watership Down" IS a great book, but it's not about "human/animal friendships."

and then there's James Herriot:

"All Creatures Great and Small (1972)

All Things Bright and Beautiful (1974)

All Things Wise and Wonderful (1977)"

Finally, check out the second link for a good list.

Watership Down by Richard Adams is supposed to be absolutely incredible. My Dad who is a writer gave it to me, but I havent read it yet. Last time I saw him he asked why I had'nt read it yet, and I said how did you know I had'nt read it? He said, because you wouldve thanked me. :)
