My rental has 60 amp service. When I turn on the microwave when anything else is running (dishwasher or microwave), I blow a fuse. If I turn on the a/c, lights dim. I haven't even tried to iron because I don't know where I can plug in the iron without a meltdown. I had telephone jacks installed at my expense since the landlord had only one working one in the home.

The simple answer is, "No".
Single family dwellings built today require at least 100Amp service. If your home (you didn't say whether this is a multiple unit dwelling) only has 60 Amp service it probably has fuses instead of breakers and the wiring is probably not up to code.
If you're getting cheap rent stay put and put up with the brown outs and blown fuses.
If you can find a comparable rate somewhere else...move.
If you want to get into a hassle with your landlord and have him raise your rent then force him to comply with current electrical code.

You have an electical short, check where you plug in your microwave, it may be shorted or burnt. Also your wiring may be under rated, you have an overload. use a wall plug tester to see if the plug is wired right. if it is wrong the tester will show it. A reverse polarity, u must correct it or you can have a fire inside your walls and you wouldn't know it's until too late. Actually the landlord is responsible for this, force him to correct it or tell him you will take him to small claims court. I think he will fix it. you are paying him to live there and don't let him bill you, unless it is in your rental agreement.

A 60 amp service is not enough for a home with a modern kitchen......microwaves, dishwashers, etc. And you mentioned fuses not breakers. Your electrical system needs upgrading. And the extension cord advice was BAD advice. unless you really want to burn the place down.

The 60 amp service is lots enough for your unit. The problem would be having too many outlets(plugins) on one breaker. You're going to have to figure out where you can plug things in and not blow a breaker. A toaster and a electric frying pan plugged into the same outlet could do it. You may have to run some extention cords to different rooms or something. Make sure you buy good ones. The cheap ones just heat up and don;t bring enough juice to your items plugged in.

.Over loading a circuit is very dangerous. Fuses are almost not heard of these days. The landlord needs to up grade. If you have fuses you might also have out dated wiring that has been banned. I would suggest you call an electrician and ask them.
