You do NOT want gravel or anything else on the bottom. If there's a substrate, the male won't be able to find the eggs after they're laid by the female as eaily. He needs to pick them up and place them in the bubble nest for the fry to develop properly.

Ditto to copperhead, gravel is a bad thing in a betta breeding tank.

gravel is good it will make them feel more comfortable and adding some grass in the bottom of the tank would be good also they have breeding grass specially for that or you can get live grass that might not be the best cause it can Cary diseases

not needed,but it can be a good decoration and makes the fish feel comfortable....
