Yes. If these kids are so violent that half the time the best they can do is kill each other or rob, destroy property and whatever, they'll do well in a properly organised war - and they'll find out what's it's like being at the other end of all their nastiness ! ! !

Would not work. The attitudes of society have moved on from the 1950's when it was phased out. Look at the classrooms and see the difference in education, not just the subjects but the ways of learning and teaching. The Services could not cope with the lack of fitness and indiscipline endemic in today's youth. The Services are a tight knit, highly disciplined and self motivated arm of society. We should be asking about the covenant we have with servicemen. They are shoddily treated and neglected by this administration.

Of course it would be a great idea - look at the respect that still exists in countries like Italy where National Service still exists. The only problem is that it wouldn't be long before the liberals were crying that the regime was too harsh for the little darlings.

Yes, bring it back, lets get the yobs off the streets and teach them discipline and, respect, the Army [ not National Service ] opened up new horizon's in my life, I've never looked back since. EDIT ; Although National Service is a good idea I think Djam's Idea would have a better effect.

I agree, bring it back, teach some of the youths of today some discipline and respect and if they could learn some sort of trade while they're there that will stand them in good stead for the future then great! Maybe it would be an idea for girls to have to go too as some young girls today are just as bad as the boys. Might even prevent so many young girls getting pregnant too, there wouldn't be as much opportunity maybe.

I'd say yes. All that excess energy can be channelled elsewhere: they can learn a bit about team work, discipline, and those that don't want to join the army or can't due to some physical problem, can opt for some sort of community service, looking after the aged, working in a home, etc...
let's bring back structure to society!

The concept of National Service is a good one but the possibility of new recruits (who don't want to be career soldiers and are only serving because it is compulsory) getting killed in Iraq/Afghanistan means I personally would be terrified of letting my teenage children be called up.

Yes, I believe it to be a good idea. Return to former values, with discipline which is much needed. I wish it had been
compulsory when I was younger. To all those who are unhappy
with the idea, looks like mainly existing or past Service personnel.....I'm sure you would be surprised with the
committment offered by new entrants, Now.
British Society needs to revitalise team spirit attitude, achievable by conscription, to renew British Patriotism

I have always agreed with national service but wonder what forced recruits would make of being sent into action.
Our present volunteer recruits who are there by choice, and their families, seem intent on complaining about their involvement in war and use every opportunity to speak about matters which at one time were covered under the official secrets act.
Now if these were conscripted recruits, we would probably never go into battle because our forces were objectors.

when you see what a lot of them are like, National service would sort a lot of them out, however National service was compulsory before, which meant every one of 18yrs had to do it. I don't think it necessary to make all 18yr olds do it, a lot of youths are not law breakers and trouble makers, but those who are found guilty of crimes like Joy riding, breaking and entering and other petty crimes, it might be a good punishment that will make then realise it's not the road to follow.

I agree 100% Then all the thugs that roam the streets looking for fights could go and do it in Iraq. A little disclipline wouldn't do them any harm either.
