I'm curious to see if there's a blog or pictures somewhere of people sleeping in the Japanese style futons. I've seen pictures and sites that show the futon, but I'm curious to see what it looks like in use.

I understand it is pretty comfortable, although some people still prefer the western style bed. When I was in my first apartment I slept on an air mattress for a little over a year, so I assume it's a lot more comfortable than that! (Probably squeaks a lot less too...)

It is surprisingly hard to find any pictures of people sleeping in a shikibuton. I did come up with two sites. The top link is more about the futon and the second is pictures of the whole process from setting up the bedding to sleeping in it. I hope that this helps.

Is there a store near you that sells them? Then you could try it out yourself!

They are very comfortable. The ones here in the US come in a variety of thicknesses (and the thicker the better.) There are also "platforms" for people who don't want to get all the way down to the ground in the traditional Japanese style (I think that is one of the biggest complaints from Westerners - they aren't used to being so close to the ground.)

Of course, the more permanent platforms don't let you fold things up like the ones that you can convert into "sofas" (But, frankly, I don't find them very comfortable as sofas)

Unless you had one of those super deluxe air mattresses - this is probably a lot more comfortable in most people's opinions. (and it doesn't squeak at all - no springs!!!)

(I slept on a futon for 3 years - they are very comfortable. Kind of like fairly firm mattresses, but a LOT less expensive! The only other thing is that you should invest in "sheet retainers" those funny elastic clips. Since most sheets these days are intended for extra thick pillow top mattresses, they fit futons funny!)

My wife and I slept on a futon for a year while I was stationed on Okinawa. They are quite comfortable, look like an air mattress and certainly don't squeak. Be sure you get a tatami mat to put between your futon and the floor. And be sure to drape your futon on a clothesline outdoors for a couple hours once a week to help keep it dry and smelling fresh.
You put your tatami mat on the floor, your futon on that and then make it up with sheets and blankets and pillows just like a regular Western style bed. And remember, if you happen to fall out of bed, you won't fall very far ;^)
