Check engine light keeps coming on after I reset code. Can not find any canisters under hood as my book says to service. Gas tank seems to be forming a vacuum when I open filler cap. Where should I look next?

if you are getting vacuum in your tank first thing is to check if the gas cap is the right one for your car someone may have lost the factory one and replace it with one from a parts store with any one.next call the dealership near you even if you did not buy it from them they will help ask them where the canister is

You may have to crawl under the car and follow the 3 fuel lines coming from the fuel tank and see where they go---one should be the pressure line to the engine fuel rail, one should be the return line from the engine and a third should be the evap line running to the charcoal cannister. On top of the cannister or in the line somewhere there should be a purge valve that is electronically operated by the computer---that is what's setting off the trouble code or something related to the wiring or connector giving the computer a bad signal. Canister might be in an obscure location---Pontiac dealer parts dept may be able to tell you where it's located or service manual should show the location---Eautorepair.net has online access for a small fee. Should be a vacuum when you remove the gas cap if the evap system is drawing vapors from the tank but it may still not be working properly.

So what codes do you get? Each code has a particular item to check. A repair manual will tell you where each sensor is and what it is for. I have a old gm truck that I've changed the o2, fuel position, accelerator, manifold sensors.

could be a faulty purge valve or vacuum switch. both are located on the top of the engine in front by the fuel rail.
