Also, run through this checklist:
- set wallpaper and screensavers to blank or none — they run continuously in the background and use memory.
- review your start menu – remove anything you don’t need on a daily basis — load games, etc. on an as-needed basis.
- from Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options: delete cookies, delete files (offline), and clear history.
- run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag at least every two weeks (the more frequently they are run, the less time they take).
- periodically, click Start, Programs, Run — they type ipconfig renew
(that’s ipconfig space renew).
These things should increase speed and free up memory as much as possible.
It will also help if you download two free programs: Ad-aware and Spybot.

I have been using CCleaner and Advanced Windows CareV2 Personal and it has speeded up my computer. Another thing you could do on a regular basis is the defragging of the hard drive, and do the mainenance on a regular basis.
Find CCleaner at http://www.ccleaner.com/download/
and Advanced Windows CareV2 Personal at http://www.iobit.com/ . Both are free.
Good luck,
William

well, first of all make sure to uninstall all the software that you don't need.
then, scan your computer for viruses and spyware. (you can get avast home edition and adaware SE from download.com for free) also get a firewall to block any attacks from hackers ( you can get zonealarm personal edition from download.com for free)
next, go to download.com and download startup control panel. you can use this program to see which programs start at windows boot. disable the ones that you don't need.
next, get ccleaner from download.com and clean your computer and then scan for issues and repair those issues. that should increase the speed of your computer. also, make sure to keep your computer cool and to reboot at least once a week if you run windows xp
