As far as the legend, its possible that Hot Springs Arkansas could have been the source of the legend..... It was a place where Indians of all tribes could go and soak in the hot thermal spring waters. There were hundreds of springs gushing from the earth with waters that were supposed to have healing properties....Hot Springs continued the same neutral zone up until the start of the 20th century....Even the gangsters went there and stayed peacefull while they were there....

There is a legend, About some conquistadors finding the fountain of youth and drank from it and they feel cursed by there deeds and now they protect the fountain from all so called out siders..........................................................
