I've thought about this often, particularly when growing up. I don't have an answer. Although, i've since coined the term 'whiny-rock' when speaking of bands like, System of a Down, Limp Bizkit, and Linkin Park.

A generation gap. My parents hated my music (mostly Rock and Dance), they preferred old time stuff and talk radio. I hate my boys music (rap & hip/hop) albeit I have a couple Eminem songs I can deal with. My dad got into Eric Clapton and Rod Stewart when they hit 60. Parents never will like the younger generation music, which is why earphones and IPods were invented I would suspect!

I don't hate the new music of the younger generation likes. In fact I like a lot of it very much. I just don't like every kind of music that some of younger generation likes.

Because now-a-days kids *my age,15 and younger* listen to absolute filth. Why is it called music anyway? It is usually unrecognizable screams into the microphone or someone rapping about Whores, Money, Whores, Cars, Whores and getting shot at. I can understand why adults hate "new music". I personally love classical music, and RARELY listen to modern day music that my peers listen to...X.x when you are obsessed with a type of music from another era (or was indeed born in that time) it is hard to accept what is accepted as modern MUSIC >.< CURSE YOU RAP AND TRIP HOP!

That's a generalisation. Most of the "younger" people I know ask me for music advice. New bands they may like that haven't heard of, genres they might like to be exposed to, and then come back to me to backfill their catalogues.
I have never stopped listening to new music in 30 years of buying vinyl, then cd's and now downloading (legally, of course). From time to time I review releases in various forums.
Having said all of that, I do not listen to the radio, and I only listen to "commercial pop" through accidental exposure. There is some great stuff being done out there, but you won't find any of it in Top 40s.

Because we older folk have spent years getting used to certain styles of music and learning to enjoy those styles. Now the younger generation, as is its right, has developed new styles, and learned to enjoy them.
But in many cases, those styles are so radically different from everything we have been used to that it is hard for us to learn to enjoy them.
Please be patient with us!
EDIT:
Although I suspect that for many young people, the best way of making them detest a certain style of music would be for the parents to say: "Oh, that's great! I love that! Let's listen to it together!" Because many seek their identity in having different tastes from their parents.

Not always so, I have two sons, ages 24, and 27. We like much of the same music, as they were growing up we all listened to the same music, old and new.
Same in my household when I was growing up, my father played guitar and other instruments, and was very open to the "new music" of the times. We listened to many different types of music, old and new.
People associate music with their youth, and the times of their lives that were important (or the bad times) and relate to those moments, where as today's music doesn't seem to relate to them. They were just as passionate for their music as you are for yours today.

Music changes with each generation. Your taste in music is usually set in your teen years and usually does not change to any great degree. With those two statements in mind, it is easy to see that as we get older, the new music just doesn't sound right. Older people like the "oldies" Today's teens will experience the same thing as they get older. The key thing to remember though, it to let others have their own choices and taste in art and just as you would like them to allow yours. It is a little like the golden rule; "treat others as you would expect them to treat you . . . if they only had better sense.

That music is aimed at the younger generation, which generally has different musical taste. Younger people are a bit easier to please: as long as it has a good beat, a catchy refrain, and a fresh-sounding style, it's good for them. Older people often look for something a bit more complex and pensive.
