And you friend has a degree in medicine from where? Go with the doctor's opinion because it's based on many decades of research backed by years of experience treating women. Your friend's opinion is just that, an opinion, based on "who knows what"!!!!
So do the math, if the pill is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy then you have a 1% chance of getting pregnant if you don't use a condom.
You should be using a condom anyways, it is not only for preventing pregnancies, it could save your life or at least save you from a lot of pain and embarassment as STDs are not fun and the pill doesn't protect you from those!

Birth control pills are statistically 99% effective. They really can prevent pregnancy, otherwise women wouldn't use them all the time. If you're 100% against becoming pregnant, the only 100% effective way to NOT get pregnant is to abstain from sex. If you're willing to deal with the less than 1% chance of becoming pregnant, birth control pills are typically a very safe route to take. Best wishes!

The effectiveness of pills relies heavily on you and how you take them if you take them like your suppose to (at the SAME time EVERY day ) I think there like 95% effective, and using a condom would only be like back up method, the pill should keep you from getting pregnant like I said if taken correctly, but as I'm sure you know NOTHING is 100% effective except abstinence! AND the pill DOES NOT protect you against STDs!!! so in that case I would continue to use a condom unless your in a committed relationship! good luck!

Your friend is wrong, wrong, wrong. Believe the doctor. Birth control pills are almost 100% effective, if you are faithful and take them at approximately the same time everyday. The only reason to use a condom is if you have multiple partners and do not want to contract a STD. I took the BCP faithfully eveyday for 13 years and did not become pregnant until I quit taking them, when my husband and I decided to start our family.

is your friend a doctor??? then why the hell would you listen to her. birth control has to be taken at the same time every day. 99% acurate means that 1 out of 100 women, less than that even, get pregnant while taking the pill properly. use condoms if you are that worried about getting pregnant. if you miss a pill and take it the next day you are more likely to get PG as well as your first month taking it. good luck

it is a well known fact that the pill is not 99% effective due to break through bleeding/pregnancy as well as the side effects that can wreak havoc in a woman's life such as: weight gain, mood swings, low sex drive, blood clots, serious drug intereactions, stroke, & PE.
Natural Family Planning is not the Catholic rhythym method but a safe & reliable way to avoid/achieve a pregnancy. It is easy to learn, cheap, easy to use, can be used by women w/irregular cycles or who have serious health problems.
My husband & I have been using NFP for 10 yrs. successfully to avoid a pregnancy due to serious health issues I have. We learned about it via a local hospital & were taught by an NFP instructor on how to chart our fertility.
It does require committment to learn it but isn't it worth it being healthy instead of worrying about breakthrough bleeding/ovulation, blood clots, a possible pregnancy, or risk having a stroke. NFP is 99.9% effective when used correctly. check out the sites listed below that show the serious risks of ortho and where to find a practitioner & info on NFP.

I would use a condom just to prevent many of the STD's.

I think I'll believe a doctor, who has to go through schooling and is QUALIFIED, instead of a friend, sorry.
99% effective as long as you use it as directed and at the same time each day.
