i got the wifi connection and i went into the wifi club but when i clicked on invite what do i do next do i wait for a friend

You need to exchange friend codes (menu > items > key item > pal pad > check code) and register your friend's code in it.
After that, go to the wifi club and if you see your friend, that means he is online, and you guys can battle or trade. If you don't see his name, he is not on.
Union room doesn't require you to exchange codes, he just has to go upstairs while you doing the same, enter and you can do whatever.
