hey there,

There is a logic question that i believe the answers are wrong to. Here it is.

Four students entered a problem solving contest. each student represented a different zone of the town. Use the clues to determine which zone each student represented and in which order the students finished.

a) Victoria came second, just behind the student from the west zone.
b) Zain represented neither the east nor the west zone.
c) The student from the north zone finished second last, just ahead of Thiffya
d) Victoria and Alicie represented opposite zones in the town

My teacher gave me the following answers

East -Alicia
West -Victoria
North -Zain
South -Thiffya

Can you please provide me with the algorithm or way of solving this question. Thanks in advance

Alicia-west
Victoria- east
Zain- north
Thiffya- south

and this is the order in which they placed

make four slots: _ _ _ _ (V goes in slot two, Z cannot be in slot one, slot one is w so put w underneath it, T is last -which is told from the rules, north is second to last, z can't be east and or west so It has to be north which is second to last, Victoria and Alicie are opposites and Victoria is east so Alicia is west.) It's really hard to explain you just have to go with it. Sorry I can't be more help!

Your teacher's wrong. Here's the order from 1st to last:

Alicie - West
Victoria - East
Zain - North
Thiffya - South

I didn't use any algorithm, I just used a piece of paper and filled in all the clues and you'll be able to figure it out. Here's the steps I did in order:

I made a table for the winners: 1 2 3 4

From clue a) we know that Victoria is in 2nd place, & 1st place is someone from west:

1 2 3 4
_ V _ _
W _ _ _

From b), Zain is neither west or east, so he can only be north or south (just keep that in mind).

From c), we know that north zone is 3rd, and 4th place is Thiffya:

1 2 3 4
_ V _ T
W _ N _

Since Zain is not from the west, the only place for him is 3rd:

1 2 3 4
_ V Z T
W _ N _

From d), Alicie is the last person on the list, so she must be 1st, and since Alicie & Victoria are from opposite zones, the opposite of west is east, so Victoria is east:

1 2 3 4
A V Z T
W E N _

Here we see that the only zone missing is south, so that must be for Thiffya, therefore:

1 2 3 4
A V Z T
W E N S

Four students (victoria, zain, thiffya and alicie), four zones (east, west, north, south), and four positions (1, 2, 3, 4)

West zone was first (a). That person isn't Victoria (a), Zain (b) or Thiffya(c), so it's Alicie.

Victoria is second (a), representing the zone opposite from Alicie; Alicie is West, so Victoria must be East.

North was third (c), so Thiffya was 4th (c). By elimination, Zain must be third.

By elimination, 4th place Thiffya must represent South.

So by my logic, your teacher got the zones reversed for the 1st & 2nd place finishers, but was otherwise correct.

Hope that helps.

1. Alicie - West
2. Victoria - East
3. Zain - North
4.Thiffya - South

Here's my thought processes:
I started by putting the numbers for the place numbers. "Victoria came second" okay, so I put Victoria in slot two. "Just behind the student from the west zone", so in slot one, I put " - West", leaving out the person's name.

I couldn't really do anything with Zain, so I skipped hint b.

"The student from norht finished second last", so in slot 3, I put " - North" leaving out the student's name. "Just ahead of Thiffya", so I put Thiffya in the fourth slot.

At first, I was stumped here, but with hint d, I realized something. Zain and Alicie were the only two people left, so they had to be in either slot 1 or 3. Knowing Zain was neither east or west, she had to be 3, by elimination. Which put Alicie in 1.

Now, since hint d says "Victoria and Alicie represented opposite zones", Victoria had to be east. That left Thiffya as south.

Just reading the hints tells you your teacher is dead wrong.

Victoria is from the East and Alicia is from the West

Victoria came second, just behind the student from the west zone. - Which means West is first and is NOT Victoria.

Zain is from either north or south, which means Alicia/Victoria are East and West, so Alicia is West and Victoria is second.
We know Thiffya is last, so North=Zain=3.

So
1. west - alicia
2 east -victoria
3 north - zain
4 south - Thiffya

Yes that's right. Victoria came is second, so East had to come in first. Zain and Thyffia could not have won because they don't live opposite Victoria. (C) says Thyffia came in after the second last or whoever came in third, so Thyffia cam in last. The person who live opposite Victoria is Alicia so she came in first. That leaves one zone open, the North zone and one name left, so Zain had to live in the North Zone and we already know that he came in ahead of Thyffia so he was third.

Just draw up a table with 1st, 2nd, etc in one column, names in the 2nd column and zones in the 3rd
then fill in the pieces of information.
You get:
1. Alicie , west
2. Victoria, east
3. Zain, north
4. Thiffya, south

I agree with BrittanyA.

Make a table on top list rank and directions
on left side list names and directions
This table is both a truth and a not table.
on a) on victoria row, mark 2, scratch off 1,3,4.
on column 2 scratch off the other names

for each question read carefully the facts and where they positively identify a relationship check it. Where the facts deny a relationship scratch it off. (Zain is neither east or west)

The table will help show relationship that cannot be true. And show when only one possible relationship remains. It is up to your logic processes to see these.

what's your genuine ingredient, are you attempting to coach to your self that this is expert by capacity of having others to a technique or the different see a mild in this? you may call happiness God, Magic Corn trojan horse, notwithstanding you like.. the element it particularly is (happiness) could be genuine, yet a random call would not grow to be genuine by capacity of being placed on it. "John = MY ideal (hence "MY" ideal exists)" If he's a real guy or woman, than specific. If he's imaginary then no, he would not.. if so purely the idolatry exists, no longer him. it particularly is how some human beings get swept up in no longer with the flexibility to tell the version between fable and actuality and commence believing unreal issues are genuine...
