Because most democrats are labeled as "liberals". If you happen to be a democrat with more conservative ideas, then you can be called a "conservative democrat". There are others like you, and there are also "liberal republicans". There's one running for president right now, and his name is Guilliani. (Not sure if I spelled his name correctly). He's the bane of his party, because he supports a lot of the ideas that are attributed mostly to democrats.

I am middle of the road I do not lean to far in either direction. I deplore abortion, yet I believe in helping the poor. I don't believe in the death penalty because many Innocent people have been executed unnecessarily this way.I sure wouldn't want the job of executioner! I do think that a death row prisoner should have life in solitary confinement. I do think that the rich get richer and the middle class are fast disappearing under Republican rule. I think that tax breaks for those who can afford to pay their taxes is ludicrous! I think that the term "liberal" is very misleading! The Republican call themselves to the "right" as in on the right of hand of God,and Democrats to the "Left" This is so wrong! That implies Left as in Devil! It God's will that we help the poor! Not Satan's!!!

We're not lefties, In other words a conservative Democrat believes in walling off the problems of Mexicans trying to ruin our country by flooding it. They also believe abortion is murder.

it really could mean one of two things...
1. your fiscally conservative and socially liberal... (sometimes this gets into 'libertarianism' though, just depends on a few things)
in other words you don't like Bush spending billions on everything, but you do believe that the government should fund some social programs, like welfare and education to some degree, as long as they could pay for them... libertarians don't tend to support any social programs...
and you think that people should be able to get abortions, married if they are gay and so on... libertarians often belive this
2. your socially conservative and fiscally liberal... you don't mind the spending or the programs... but you don't like things like gay marriage and abortion...
Conservatives would be conservative both fiscally and socially on average... no gay marriage and no spending on social programs...

In my opinion, it means you are in favor of a centralized government, a safety net, such as welfare, for the poor, but are socially conservative.
The South is full of them. And with the Liberals running amok, I consider conservative Democrats to be very positive for the US.
