I'm trying to figure out some math, so for all you Mothers and Fathers out there, I have a question for you. :)

I'm about to be a Mom as of September 15th and was wondering for the parents who have NEWBORNS how long does a package of diapers (containing 56 diapers within the pack) last you? How many times per month do you have to go shopping for diapers? What brands are the best? Do you buy wipes and changing pads with that? How much all in all do you spend per time when you go out and buy those things/how long do they last? Estimated guess?

My baby is now nearly 7 months old so I can tell you our experience. A package of 56 for a newborn is going to be about a weeks worth. In the beginning you can figure that your baby will eat about 8 times per day and will need a diaper change at every feeding. Then you'll want to figure maybe 1-2 more per day for those times that you've just put on a new diaper and your baby poops immediately. Don't go overboard on newborn size. The hospital will send you home with the remainder of a package, then (assuming you have an average size baby) you'll want perhaps 2 more of the newborn size before moving into size 1. After a few months you'll use significantly fewer diapers each day. For the last few months we've been down to about 5-6 per day. 90% of the time we use Huggies unless there's a sale on Pampers that makes them cheaper than Huggies.

But as for the package of 56, I never buy a package that small. You'll spend so much more money in the long run if you buy smaller packages than you would buying in bulk. If you can, join Costco or Sams Club, a box of those will last you about a month. If not, you may want to check out amazon.com/grocery or 1800diapers.com to buy large cases--plus they'll ship to your house for free and no sales tax.

Wipes I also buy in bulk. Our favorite are the Kirkland brand from Costco (you can also get them on 1800diapers.com). Each package is its own "tub" so you can put the packages everywhere and they're a lot stronger than other brands. A case of those lasts about 6 months.

Changing pads. We use a blanket on the changing table with nonstick shelf liner under it to keep it from sliding. For the diaper bag I keep the Huggies disposable changing pads for those times we're out in a place that doesn't have a changing table in the bathroom and I have to change her on the floor.

A case of Huggies at Costco is $40 and lasts a month (size 1 has 228 per box and there are fewer per case until size 4 that has about 160 per box). A case of Kirkland wipes is $16 and lasts for about 6 months. The disposable changing pads were about $2.50 for 8.

While every baby is different I can tell you in my own experiance, that diapers in this house hold do not last long. When my daughter was a newborn we went through an 88 pack of diaper every week. Now that she is 4 months old we buy 120 pack of diapers every other week.

It certainly does get expensive. We use pampers and pampers wipes with aloe. Those seem to be the best so far. As for the changing pad, one came with our diaper bag that we purchased at target.

We normally spend $20 each time but we look for deals when we do.

Every baby is different and every parent is different. So it really depends on how often you want to change them and how often the baby poops.
Personally I would change my daughter when she was poopy or when the diaper felt heavy or full (about every 4 hours). I changed her in the middle of the night only if she was poopy or it felt like the diaper was going to leak. So let's see 10 hours at night was typically 2 diapers and then every 4 hours otherwise makes about 6 diapers a day (including one poopy in the mix. Oh and then their were the wasted ones where when it wasn't on yet she peed on the changing table and I didn't see it until after putting the new diaper on the table and getting the outside of that one wet. Oh and the ones where she pooped immediately after changing her (an amazing talent babies have). So umm let's see that 6 a day and then count 2 for the things that happen so that's 8 diapers a day. so 56 diapers would last 7 days.
You also have to take into account your comfort level with your child being wet, some parents change with every pee, others (like me) trust the diapers of today and know the diapers do a great job of keeping that moisture off the baby's bottom. You need to evaluate what you think you will be like and go from there!
Oh and then your child will change all that because if you choose to change all the time they will hate being changed, if you choose to change when necessary your child will cry every time he/she wets. Or my daughter's trick of pooping after almost every diaper change! Good luck!

I would say only about a week. It is best to shop in advance because you never know for sure how much you little one will need a change. Every baby is different. Mine got changed every time she ate, about every 3 hours. I found that Pampers Swaddlers were the best. No leaks and very flexible sides to grow into. Also, pretty affordable. They are soft and not as stiff as some other diapers. Plus, they usually have coupons for more inside the package! The hospital used them and they have been great for me!

pampers swaddlers, they are expensive but they are sure nice and the best!! and they last about 5 to 6 days for a pack of 56 I suggest buying at least 2 packs of newborns, and pampers sensitive wipes. I spend about 80 dollars a month max on diapers and wipes ( I buy the wipes in the refill packs and get like 200 wipes and they last me about a month) and I shop maybe 3 or 4 times a month, just when I go grocery shopping. as for the changing pad, I just use recieving blankets on a nice comfy place on the living room floor. p.s. I live in canada and pampers swaddlers cost me $17.98 a pack for 56 and wipes cost me 6.99 for 200 wipes

Hello:

When I gave birth to my little daughter,56 diapers did not last very long when she was a newborn because she was breastfed, and she easily went through 12-16 diapers a day! As my daughter got older she would go through about 8-10 diapers a day from about the age of two months old and on. I used to use Pampers Bay Dry diapers for the first year of her life, but they cheapened them so badly, that as soon as she peed her diaper you could smell it,and the diapers weren't very absorbent either!

I then started buying Huggies diapers and they worked very well, however they were very expensive so this is what I did! I went to our local Rite Aid pharmacy and tried their brand of baby dri diapers and I LOVED THESE DIAPERS!! They were very affordable, and they were very absorbant too! My other favorite diaper was the Meijer brand of Baby Dry diapers,do you know that I could buy a package of over 60 diapers for under $10.00,I am not joking I am serious!

The Meijer diapers had the refastenable diaper designs on the front of the diaper with different characters, and so did the Rite Aid brand too. I loved both brands of the Rite Aid and Meijer brand of baby dry diapers because they were almost ALWAYS having specials on their diapers and I could buy over 100 diapers (2 packages of diapers),for UNDER $20.00,not kidding! Now I know what you are probably thinking,"Well these brand of diapers must not of sold as well as the,NAME BRAND of diapers right?" Nope, believe it or not,as soon as these stores got these diapers in,they sold out, because parents were discovering that you don't have to pay a fortune for diapers, and both of these store brand of diapers worked GREAT!!

Now the only thing I will warn you on,is that I used to pay the extra money to get either Pampers or Huggies baby wipes, because they did work better than the store brand of baby wipes, and they didn't seem to lose their moisture either. One other quick tip that I would like to pass along is please don't buy ALL OF YOUR DIAPERS in just the NEWBORN SIZE,because my ultrasound tech tried telling me that I was going to have a baby that weighed about 7-8 pounds two days before I had her,and when she was born, she weighed a hefty 9 pounds 1 ounce.

I got ONE PACKAGE of the newborn sized diapers, and I bought one package of the size one diapers and I am so glad that I bought a bag of diapers that was one size larger than the newborn diapers,a size one. The reason is because my daughter was chunky when she was born, and the newborn size diapers were tight on her!!

I would estimate that a package of 56 diapers would last you about three to four days,if that! You honestly won't be able to tell how many diapers you will be going through, until you have your baby, because every baby is different on how much and how often they go!! Congratulations on becoming a parent, you are going to love it,trust me!! (((HUGS AND BEST WISHES))))) ;-)

my daughter loves pampers.we went through about 56 diapers a week for the first month.they poop alot.so what i did was i bought diapers up to size 2.tell people you need those sizes of diapers if you have a baby shower.and i shop at walmart, and they have wipes in the pharmacy section, and we use the equate ones in the green refills.they are really thick and work great.we never bought changing pads cause you would go threw to many.we used cloth diapers cause they can also be used for burping rags cause they are thicker.my daughter is now 10 months old and we buy wipes once a month, rarely twice.and diapers twice a month..always buy in the box, more for your money.any more questions and you can instant message me or email me and i will gladly answer.ive been through it all just about.my daughter currently has pneumonia.

I found, with all three of my kids, that 1 standard size package of diapers... no matter what size... lasted about a week. The large the baby gets, the less changing they need in a day... so the larger diapers come in smaller numbered packages.

For a newborn it might last you 3 weeks. Once the baby gets older, it will last 2 weeks. They use a lot of diapers.
If your baby has good bowls, it might last you 1 1/2 weeks.
You pretty much learn as you go. Every baby is a little different. Good luck.

we have an 11 week old and 56 diapers of the pampers swaddlers lasted us about 6 days or so...they are now a bit snug on her legs and size one is too big, be prepared to switch sizes before you actually finish the bag, we did!!
