I'm almost 30, and feel great inside, mainly due to all the exciting sports, practised from an early age.
I stretch a lot, rest and do yoga.
Now, how might I look and feel at 70 yrs old...?

No one was in extremely good shape before, say, the sixties.
The actor who played Tarzan was like a model for good shape, and really, he looked goofy and "tense".....looked like crap.
So we don't know the effects of physical discipline in time.
My father was a boxer since the seventies and now looks really good and young even though he's 63.

Our knowledge of proper exercise and the prominence of sports in the last 15 to 20 yrs has made a lot of us real healthy. So my question is, don't you think we'll push the limits of human wellness and longevity in about 30 yrs from now??

Johnny Weismuller was the No. 1 Tarzan. He did the show longer than anyone else. He was a pro swimmer before Tarzan. There was another guy who did the comic book advertisments "the bully kicked sand in my face, I was an 80 pound weakling," who did exercising by doing upside down pushups with his hands. BOTH men looked GREAT when they were in their 30's and 40's. BUT....

then the BOTH got in their 60's and 70's and they looked AWFUL!!

Why?

They BOTH did not do the most important exercise of all; WEIGHTLIFTING!!

Lifting your bodyweight is NOT weighlifting.

Do you hear that, Chuck Norris? with your sliding bodyweight-resistance machine?

You HAVE to lift weights, you HAVE to lift heavy, but lift only once a week. A power rack is excellent for lifting heavy, and lifting safely.

And you have to do DAILY aerobics, stretching, and light weights.

Look up Jack LaLanne on the internet. He is 93 and lift weights daily.

I am 55, been weightlifting since age 34. I am 6'2" tall, 273 pounds and wear an XXL shirt. I see every day what a 55 year old man looks like, it is not pretty!!

Rest and yoga will NOT keep the body you have. Metabolism and gravity will pull everything down. You HAVE to do stronger exercises.

People can live to age 120, and be strong and healthy, happy, with daily exercise.

Yes we're all going to live longer than previous generations, that is if we don't kill each other off in car accidents, wars or destruction of our own habitat.

The big problem with your statements is that looks are not equivalent to health. Its ridiculous to say that nobody was in good shape before the 60's and especially if you're basing that on a movie character.

Yes human performance keeps improving at the high end but in terms of the average populace I fear that people are actually less healthy these days (despite living longer lives).

My dad is 73 and he's fitter than my 16 year old nephew.

I do respect you for staying active and maintaining your health but I fear that you are in the minority.

More knowledge never applies itself. People, including myself, will continue to eat fast food, and unhealthy things. More scientific knowledge will just make them have to justify it more and more. Besides, who says we know a lot about health today? I hear conflicting reports all the time. Things saying stuff like "a little bit of marijuana every day is actually healthy" or "chocolate is actually great for the digestive system" while simultaneously we hear that "spinach is poisonous" or "too much fruit will destroy your bladder".

Probably not, the big business in this country is rehabilitation centers and assisted living homes. Why, because the majority of Americans sit too much and watch too much T.V. But staying physically active as well as mentally active keeps you younger.

Well, you know what they say. If you eat all of the right foods, exercise everyday, take your vitamins, and do everything your doctor tells you to do, you may or may not live longer but it will sure seems like it!

It all depends on how many injuries and conditions/diseases you accumulate. Or you can learn too fix them, why wait.
