absolutely with no deferments but for those who are not inclined to fight alternative service such as taking care of veterans, public works, and for the handicapped answering phones perhaps, but it instills value and self worth. Most cultures had some sort of duties for young people, teaching them that there are no free lunches in the world, which is a good thing.
FYI- Ike or President Eisnehauer first suggested this, and while he was a retired 5 star general he also was leary of the Military Industrial Complex so you cant call him a chickenhawk

I think a compulsary service to the country, not necessarily military, would be a good thing for the individual and the country, but it would be very expensive to do. There are those whose religion would not let them carry weapons. Put them to work doing basic labor in military or VA hospitals. Send some to help with schools, making copies, etc. The main problem is money. If we make service compulsary, then we would have to pay everyone at least the E-1 wage. That would be a lot of money.

No we have a better and smarter military by having an all volunteer military.
If you force people to join you would end up with troops that do not want to fight.
You would also have more people that will cause problems.
We have a few trouble makers in the military but most are honorable decent and hard working.

Come on, you can be more creative. How about compulsive civic service. If they can't deal with the army there's plenty of work to be done all over the country cleaning up messes, helping people, working for you state, your community. I believe that for each year of compulsory service, you should get one year of education relating to some aspect of the field you have chosen to work in, thus producing a productive citizen who is aware that we have a civilization only because people in the past worked for us.

No, better to pay mercenaries from Blackwater $100 K than to actually ask every American to do a years service for their country.
At least that's the way the corporate whores in the GOP see it.

I believe one year of compulsory community service should be mandatory for every American citizen between the ages of 18 and 21. They could select the kind of service they wish to provide, and it could be compatible with their advanced education plans. Those going on to college could volunteer to participate in a local Kiwanis club or Lions club; those interested in the environment could serve with Greenpeace; those interested in military service could join our armed forces, etc., etc. Community service gives people a sense of responsibility, not just to themselves - but to others. It would be helpful in keeping government costs down at so many bureaucratic agencies or national parks, rivers, etc. -RKO- 06/16/07

To answer your question...Not in the long run but until society has evolved to the point of world peace and rightfully being recognized as civilization it will probably happen and this in turn will cause a regression and so the paradox

NO
because good citizenship means giving to the government when it is good for the country, and necessary.
NEVER, just 'out of habit'
good citizens LIMIT the power of government, they dont blindly enable it
i just shake my head at how few people get that
