I think it's more important to always be grateful for the things you receive, so to simply say Thank You is very important.

As a Mom I am attempting to teach my children that both are very important. If I have to make a choice I will go with Thank You....and expression of gratitude can make a person's day. Even if all they do is hold the door for you.

If I had to choose, I think I would go with the Thanks or Thank You. It is good to use at least one--or even both does not hurt.
Now, I am saying thank you to you. lol
