what do you do?

If you are staying on a farm as a guest and not working, there are still a lot of things you can do. Is there a lake or stream nearby? You can go fishing, swimming, or build a raft or little boat and sail around. You can go star gazing at night. You can explore the farm. You can make a kite and fly it. You can look for wildlife. You can draw or paint. If there are horses, you can ride them. You can make cheap fireworks or little hot air balloons. There's really no end to the things you can do on a farm by yourself in the middle of nowhere.

One of my favorite books is the "American Boy's Handy Book" by Daniel Beard. It has tons of things you can do for little or no money (including instructions on how to make fire works, hot air balloons, dart guns, and boats, among other things), and it was just reprinted a not long ago so there's a good chance you can find it in a library.

As a reviewer of the book said:

"Filled with black & white illustrations and schematics, this guide for American boys, originally published in 1882, is organized by season and is chock-full of instructions, suggestions and advice about kites, fishing, knots, telescopes, tents, soap bubbles, animals, snowball warfare, puppets, kaleidoscopes, whirligigs, costumes, decoys--even fireworks!! The emphasis is on building things yourself, and to that end it is an extremely valuable handbook for our increasingly passive society. There are definitely things here that will give you pause or that are culturally dated -- like making a blow gun, trapping and raising wild animals and taxidermy at home -- but that is where parenting comes in, and all-in-all I would say this is a valuable and exciting book for kids, filled with pragmatic insights and a fun historical document as well. Snowball war, anyone?"

You get up before dawn, eat a quick breakfast and then start the daily chores, feeding and watering all the animals, milking the cows, mucking out the barns.

Then the real work begins. Working with the crops, either planting or weeding or watering or harvesting, you take a break for dinner by one or two pm, then it's back out to work until sundown.

Sometime during the day you have probably had to repair some of the farm equipment, help one of your cows have a calf if she is having a breech birth, and do a dozen more projects just to keep the place running.

There is not a lot of time for being bored, or playing around on the Internet. In order to be a farmer, you really have to love the life and love working with the land. It is neither glamorous or bank account building, but it can be rewarding in other ways.

I could not do it myself, but have lots of family members who do and I admire them greatly.

I feed my 2 feeder calves in the morning, check the hogs since they're on automatic feed & their water container holds over 60 gallons (fill that up if it needs it). Right now I'm working on painting my basement when I'm not goofing around on the computer or watching TV. If it's nice out I go run or swim (not in the creek- a real pool!) I work with my calves in the evening since they're going to a show in a couple weeks and they're not exactly ready!

I've seen pictures of my Grandparents homestead farm in Wagon Mound NM circa WWI - 1921. They went to LA. So would I.

Location location location

My Great, great, great Uncle homesteaded in Eureka CA around 1895. I would stay there on the porch and go kill trout every morning.

Play on the computer, read. Usually farmers have to work long hours, so I would imagine there isn't much time, but I could be wrong. I never lived on a farm. What do you want to do?
