Several ways:

1. With NUM LOCK set, press and hold the ALT key, then type 154 (this gives the Ü) or 129 (ü). This should work in all applications.
2. Find the Character map utility (usually in Accessories->System Tools off the Start->All Programs menu) and copy the character you want, then paste it where you want it.
3. In MS Word, click the Insert->Symbol menu item and do the same.
4. Also in MS Word, press and hold CTRL and SHIFT, then press : (colon) followed by the u or U

The 'two dots' are called an umlaut, and replaces an 'e' that comes after the letter under it.

If you are using Microsoft Works, follow the instructions below:

Click in a document where you want to insert a special character.

On the Insert menu, click Special Character.

Click the Special Character tab.

In the Special Character list, click the special character you want to add.

Press Insert.

To add another special character to the document, repeat steps 4 and 5.

Works inserts each character next to the others.

I used this technique when writing out T.S. Eliot's 'The Naming of Cats' in German. I hope this helps.

You already got the answers, I just wanted to tell you that an Ü is not a "German U", the letter U exists in German too and looks just like in English, Ü is a different letter (an umlaut).

Try a Google search for "windows alt codes" and you should be able to find it and the other codes. Penn State has a page with many of them (linked below). The sequence 0252 gives you ü and 0220 gives you the Ü .
