Its a ego issue, a look at me thing, in short its a mask for insecurity.
Much like the short guy who climbs into the behemoth 4 wheel drive, support the troops stickers out the wazoo filled, gas guzzling, credit card indebted moron mobile.

I think you have answered your own question by saying you should just wear it on special occasions. It is nice to have something lovely to inherit and remember your great grandmother by, so keep it safe and wear at home or on holidays and your birthday. You are right people sadly would see a nice watch and it could be stolen especially livibg in the city. Enjoy the Rolex but don't flash it about.

It's certainly not just to keep the time - my $25 Timex has been doing this for years and I don't pay any particular attention to how how hard it gets beaten when I work.
I suspect we can put it right up there with $125 designer jeans and the little visible tags and logos on so many over priced items now days.
If it provides the owner with a little satisfaction and self confidence or what ever - I say go ahead and splurge.
As far as I'm concerned, if you paid more for your watch than I paid for my vehicle, it speaks volumes about you - and they're not particularly complimentary volumes.

Dey likes the gold...it proves that they are succesful.
In his case he can afford a Rolex watch ( and never holding down a job I might add) , and it is a very high quality watch.
But even the po' ones like gold and status too...that is why in the hood you see them drive by in crappy pontiacs with rims that are spray painted gold. All about status . Word.

I have no interest in a Rolex. I am very happy with my Bulova. But everytime I mention it, it tries to die on me, so it must be time to buy a battery.
Reminds me of an old Yuppie joke. Yuppie is in a bad car accident. Cop comes to the scene and the Yuppie is saying, "My beamer, my beamer..." Cop says, "Lady, your arm is missing, and you're crying about your car." Yuppie says, "My rolex, my rolex..."

Maybe because they like how they look, how the work, and they can afford it.
You could ask this question about a million unnecessary material things people buy.
For example....why buy name brand food when generic will fill your stomach just as well?

Wearing a watch is out dated. We now have cell phones to tell us the time.
