As a teacher for over 35 years, I can say that I have never cried but do get emotional when I see certain students graduate. Most of the time I am very happy to see them move on to other "bigger and better" things in their lives. Honestly, I am happy to see a few of them go!!

I've been teaching 8th grade for 6 years. On the last day of school all the teachers line up next to the busses and wave goodbye. I cry then, or when I see the boys crying.
I get emotionally attached to my students. What makes it worse is out of the 150 kids I teach a year only about 20 of them come back and visit. Therefore when they leave the school, most of them I will never see them again.

I am a student that just graduated 8th grade. Shortly before graduation, my teacher said something very interesting regarding this. He said that he took the first couple of years that he taught very hard when his students graduated. But now, he has changed his outlook on the matter. Instead of viewing graduation as a bad thing, he views it as a time to move forward, a good thing. So, he used to cry but he changed his view of the matter and now does not. I guess whether or not a teacher cried depends on how emotional they are and their outlook on what is taking place.

I'm a first grade teacher, too, and I've always cried at the last day of school. A great number of my students are itinerant, so I never know from one year to the next if I'll ever see them again. This was my tenth year as a certified teacher, but my 17th year in education (I was a parapro for seven). It's hard to let "my kids" go to another teacher!!

I am not a teacher. But I would like to say, that teachers would only cry if their son is graduating or if there beloved student( if the teacher is very affected by this student) is graduating. You know graduation is a day to laugh cause you have finished your duty with certain student, and you have prepared them for something.

There are some students that have had to work very very hard to graduate. That moment touches me. But as for the majority, no I don't cry. I am very happy for them to move on to bigger and better things. I have done my part and now it is time to fly the nest.

I teach first grade and at the end of the year I do not cry. I smile and want to turn cartwheels. My the end of May I am ready for a break from them! BUT...about one week into the new school year I start missing my old class and wishing I could have looped with them.

I was an elem teacher and recently retired. Usually your first class is the hardest, you do become very attached to the kids and involved in their lives when you spend 6 hours a day with them., We actually spend more time with them than their parents during the school year.
