There are two major groupings of law--criminal law and civil law. You can practice criminal law on a local level (local DAs office or equivalent) or federal level (either with the US Attorney's office or the Department of Justice). There is all kinds of criminal law--sex crimes, guns and drugs, gangs, homicide, misdemeanors, traffic crimes, tax evasion, civil rights violations, computer crimes. There are as many types of criminal law as there are crimes.
Civil law is much broader and all-encompassing. The majority of civil lawyers are transactional attorneys. This means, basically, that they're paper pushers. They will write contracts, file papers with government entities, advise clients on how to avoid liability, write advisory memos.
The other civil lawyers are "litigators." These are the people that handle cases that are preparing to go to trial. They will interview their clients, collect evidence, conduct discovery (collecting evidence from the other side), conduct depositions, participate in hearings with the judge, conduct settlement negotiations, and, if needed, try the case in a court of law.
Everything that people do has a corresponding area of law. Family law handles divorces/custody. Criminal law defends or prosecutes. Environmental law, securities law, business transactions, international trade, product liability, intellectual property, entertainment. If humans engage in it, there are laws to regulate it and there are attorneys who specialize in it.

you have a local city government--- a county government--- state government--- and a federal government--- they all have their own set of laws and guide lines that they go by.... Good luck on figuring them out. If you are wanting to know about a specific law then go to your local library and ask for their most recent copy of laws on that specific subject. Good Luck... When you think you have them figured out they change them so you have to really keep up with the laws and by-laws that happen to pop up out of the blue.
