It's not the computer that "lasts" but the components.
You must know what is the oldest, and the most deprecated component inside. Is it the motherboard, the processor, the ram? the drive?

If you change it piece by piece, you actually are renewing it piece by piece, so you can theoretically go on like that for centuries.

But I think you would save a lot of money and time and work if you'd buy a new, non-top-of the line, complete system, with warranty, with everything set up already.

That is an interesting question in all seriousness. Technically speaking, it could last 10 or more years. But the problem is, that is a really long time in computer years. Kinda like dog years. The technology changes so quickly, that what you buy today, is likely to be behind the latest and the greatest in 6 months or less. The real issue is, how much program can your computer handle. If you just need to get email or do some word processing, your computer could be good for many years. On the other hand, if you like gaming and the latest in best of programs, you will need to move ahead with the new technology needed to run them every 2 years of so.

I would say the average time would be about 5 years. After that time frame some hardware components will start to fail a can be replaced to keep it running if you are lucky to still be able to find the parts.

there are computers where i work that must be 20 or 25 years old. They have tiny green screens and make weird beeping sounds at me.

They use them for god knows what, and they give me the creeps.

as long as you want. you can keep replacing hardware to make it run longer but youd probably be just wasting your money.
