A scavenger that I don't need to buy more than one of, and that won't outgrow my tank.

thanks

Your tank is too small for most scavengers, but you might be able to get away with a small snail like an olive nerite they only get to about one inch max and cannot breed in a freshwater tank. Now in my opinion the olive nerite snail is best for a betta because the betta can't hurt the snail even if it tried.

As others have mentioned, the Otocinclus Catfish is a nice choice but more of an algae eater. Ghost Shrimp are good scavengers but you better provide hiding places because the chances are good that if the shrimp is not large, the Betta will consume it. Here are some other suggestions as well. Kuhli Loaches (2) will dig in and live in the gravel or you can try 2 of the smaller type Corydoras. It depends on what is available in your area and the time of the year. Albino Corydoras (1) is the last choice.

That tank is too small to support most scavenger fish. You could add a pair of Ghost Shrimp and if they don't get eaten by the betta they do a decent job as scavengers.

Whether or not a beta will tolerate something in it's tank really depends on the individual beta. I've been told snails are usually good...I've tried it but got rid of it because the beta would not stop picking at the antennas every time they were up. This may or may not be the case with yours....Might be worth a try (just make sure you don't get the tiny snails that multiply!). Hope this helps :)

The little Octocinclus catfish, they don't get to big and they don't destroy the tank...might can even get two. It is a small (2") algae-eating fish which is perfect for the tropical freshwater aquarium. It is a diligent worker, doesn't have an aggressive bone in its body, and is fun to watch interact with others in a group. Other names for otocinclus are "otos", or "dwarf suckermouth catfish". http://www.otocinclus.com/

Unfortunately, with a tank that small, you can not support any more fish than the one betta.

you really don't have room. if you feel you need something get 3 ghost shrimp -- thats only about .50 or a dollar and they will clean until they molt and then they will make shrimp dinner for your betta.
