NO --
The counseling services for someone who is transgendered will probably be covered, at least in part; but the surgical procedures and hormone therapies most likely would not be considered "medical necessities" but "cosmetic services" instead, and therefore not covered.
FYI --
MediCARE is the health plan for elderly (over 65) or disabled; while MedicAID is the health program offered through public assistance

Medicare is health insurance for the elderly or disabled. I don't think too many elderly or disabled people are looking for a sex change operation, Einstein.

Most healthcare insurance companies will not fund 'sex change' surgery, because they believe it to be cosmetic, or 'psychological', surgery.
We're trying to drag them out of the 14th century and teach them that transsexualism is a congenital condition that requires medical and surgical intervention, but it's a slow process.
('Carolyn M' and 'Shrink'; you might be surprised at how many elderly transpeople there...a good friend of mine has just had Sex Affirmation Surgery at the age of 67...)

No, there is some sanity still left in the Federal government. Now, San Francisco is a case where the patients are clearly running the asylum.

Mostly no. I say mostly, because some are (in the cases of hermaphrodites or deformed sexual organs)
But if you are physically a normal male/female they will not pay for the operations as they are considered elective. I don't think any Insurance companies will pay for these, and I doubt it's likely to ever change.

Medicare does not pay for sex change operations. Which it shouldn't. Medicare should only pay for preventative surgeries, or ones where someone is in a life threatening situation.

Heaven help us. Medicare is for Seniors. Hopefully by the time they are that old, they've come into some acceptance of their bodies. Likely, if they opted for surgery, it would be for their own body, pre-50ish.
