(Q1) You need to have a building that generates all the electricity it consumes per month. It can borrow electricity from the grid if it pays it back. Another requirement would be managing it's own temperature without using gas or oil. Finally, if it's to be a truly self sufficient building it must purify it's waste before it leaves. It can still draw water from local supply if it puts it back. Self sufficiency doesn't mean it exists in a vacuum it means it doesn't consume any "net" external resources.

(Q2) Solar panels are an obvious way to generate energy. Then you must also have windows and building materials that hold in heat. Geothermal heating cooling is a way to maintain a constant temperature. When it's too hot you circulate air from the cooler basement.

(Q3) No toxic materials, keep careful watch over batteries.

(Q4) Be more specific, pollution from the building or polution in the environment. You could filter the water or use evaporation to clean it out.

In order to have a fully self-sufficient building it must be completely off the the grid - it must provide it's own means of electricity it is not connected to the city line a renewable source is typically used like wind, or solar energy also it must be seperated from the main sewage line so you must get rid of your own waste water as well as have an individual water line so you're not going to have water that the city around you uses flowing in your home and when you flush the water isn't going down to a sewer. An alternative choice for the sewage line could be a septic tank, and for the water you could collect rain water. The energy from solar and wind sources can also be stored in batteries for days when there isn't much sun or wind. I can't provide answers for all the questions but hope this helps. You might want to try looking up information on self-sufficient homes because you may be able to use it to help answer your questions.

Do an internet search for the first eco friendly building that just recently opened in New York. It will give you some ideas.
