I don't think there is just one "King of Rock and Roll". I believe who originated the sound of Rock music should be considered that high rank title. People such as Chuck Barry, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Little Richard brought the funk and hardcore neccessity to Rock music.

Long John Baldry claimed he was the king of rock and roll, when he wrote the lyrics
'Don't try and play no boogie woogie on the king of rock and roll' (he is referring to himself in the song).
Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, Elton John, just to name a few rocks stars, all started with Long John Baldry early in their careers.

Little Richard and Chuck Berry and such were empire builders my friends but they are not monarchs. The Kings that derived from the original ground works of them and made the music the universal success it is today is The Beatles. I know its kinda cliche' but no body else had girls passing out in droves just because they to a look at them. Plus The Beatles continued to evolve from the band they were during "Beatlemania" and actually evolved studio use in music.
