First off, I applaud you for not being a follower! It's not easy being 17. When I was your age, I was just starting out with my first serious boyfriend, just lost my virginity to him, but sex wasn't the #1 thing on my mind. And we were always careful and always used protection the few times we did anything.
But, to answer your question....
It's because in our society these days, the teen pregnancies are glorified by the media.
Parents don't pay attention to their kids these days. When I was in high school (class of '94) it was rare for a teen to become pregnant. Not unheard of, but rare. And those who did, it was a shocker. These days though, parents are too busy to pay attention to their kids, and rely too much on school's to teach their kids about sex and STD's and such. Then they want to blame it on someone else when their daughter comes home and tells them that she's pregnant.

Some of them just don't care, and I am sad to say, that some of them do it on purpose to have someone to love them or to get their boyfriends to stick around. I had friends in high school like that. I applaud you for having better sense. My high school boyfriend(now my husband) and I were together for three years before we ever had sex(he was my first). Most couples aren't like that, they don't get to know each other before they get that involved. All I can say to you is keep using protection, but make sure you are ready in case an accident happens to you. Like you said accidents happen!

Dear friend, You are relying on birth control rather than focusing your mind on Purity and Goodness, then avoiding temptation. Sincerely, Runner

some of these girls are just dumb, some are very naive or uneducated, some believe that they are mature enough to have a baby. almost all of them are wrong!
don't forget that the men are just as stupid, irresponsible, naive, or misled, they get the blame too!

No one truly has a place to judge others all you can do is voice your opinion, not every teen ager has the right mentality. Just be glad that you're not one of them!

Because the media glorifies bad decisions and never mentions the careful, smart people out there. *shrugs*
And you could always blame sex ed that's based on unrealistic abstinence.
