My dog has been in a moderate amount of pain after she got spayed. I asked for pain meds, but the tech said she has already been given meds at the office. Is it normal not to give any when the pet comes home?

Absolutely they need pain medication after ANY surgery! At our practice we do not give you a choice--the pet is sent home with several days of medication. Spaying is major abdominal surgery and is very painful. Animals feel pain exactly like we do, but by instinct they do not show it like we do. They try to hide how miserable they are, and will even wag their tails and "look" happy. It is a poor vet that will not administer pain medications after surgery. Go to the emergency hospital and have them see your dog so they can give you medication. Don't wait until Monday. Then find a new vet.

I've had animals spayed for years. They never asked me if I wanted extra pain meds.

In the last 5 years, it's always been an option. But, if you go to a weekend spay day, they don't offer it.

Watching the dozens of cats that I have had spayed, they are absolutely fine without extra pain meds.

I've seen cats that are spayed and neutered up and about within a few hours acting and playing absolutely like normal. The animals take the pain very much more than humans do.

Just this past week, I found a cat with her back leg dangling. It was obviously broken. She didn't act like she was in pain, unless you touched her leg.

She's going to have to have surgery or maybe even have to have her leg amputated. But, to look at her, you would never believe she was in pain. She's staying at the vet, just to see what happens when the swelling goes down.

She's not meowing and complaining of any kind of pain, when any one of us humans would be yelling for pain killers.

Animals can take pain better than we could ever understand.

The downside of giving pain meds to animals is that they do not know enough not to jump around. If you dull the pain to the point that the dog feels better, she has a good chance of injuring herself. Pain is helpful in such situations, to keep the dog quieter so she can heal.

My canine develop into neutered 4 days in the past and he has swollen as much as the size of a plum. I have not have been given any extra rimadyl and he seems to be very uncomfortable. I didnt think of he may be so swollen and evidently painful to be putting there like that. Is there something i delivers him to ease the discomfort?

I don't know about dogs, but i know for a fact, that when i had all my cats neutered, they did not need any pain medication, they just had some stitched in thier side for a while, which needed to be taken out by the doctor, but my mom used to be a nurse, so she does it herself. As i said, for cats it usually doesn't take long to heal, and they are not in pain for very long, but if your worried, you can always call you vet and double check

When my cats were spayed the vets gave her a few days of oral pain medication. I don't understand why they wouldn't give you any? Those jerks! Your cat should be okay within a week or so though.

It depends on your vet. Some vets give pain medicine while others don't. I would call your vet's office again and ask to speak with the vet about it. Don't give anything, even aspirin, without consulting a veterinarian.

Give her 1/2 an aspirin for pain relief. That tech didn't have any decency!

You would think that they should be given mediaction for when the anesthetic wears off but my cat didn't get anything after her operation. She didn't seem to be in pain though. the vet only said to make sure the cut stays clean and doesn't get infected.

I had my dog neutered 3 weeks ago and my parents had their dog spayed just last week. Neither time did they give us any pain meds.

If your dog is in pain you can give her a little aspirin.
