I just bought a 1986 Chevy Van to use as a work vehicle. I have approx $450.00 in the van.
305 eng / standard automatic 3 speed tranny. It has only 78,000 miles on eng & tranny & never has been in to. Over all the van is in very very good condition for the age.
This vehicle set up for approx 5 years & only was cranked up & moved mabey 3 times during this time span.
earlier i replaced tranny filter & tranny oil.
All gears work very well.
I have got it running just about perfect.
Then after approx 30 miles the tranny developed a front seal leak.
My question, Shop wise, approx what would it cost me for this front seal replacement ?
Thank You,
Luke.

sounds like you got a good deal on it ,the labor would run you around 250 bucks on that one ,i own a shop and this isn't a bad job to do ,the part is around 20 bucks and all together i usually just charge a flat rate of 250 on those, because it takes less than a day to complete this, most shops will be about the same on this job, good luck with it,hope this helps.

Nice deal! Before you worry about anything else, make sure to check the gas tank and fuel system thoroughly! This is critical for any vehicle that has been "sitting" for any length of time such as 5 years. Rust and/or water contamination can ruin everything. As for a seal replacement, shop labor rates will vary. The main issue will be how many hours they want to bill you for. Unless there is some kind of unforeseeable complication, this job should take a shop no longer than 2 hours. Try to get a fixed price quote, allowing for any "extra" work they might encounter.

Try this first.... Get a bottle of Lucas transmission additive. It's suppose to lubricate and condition the seals and inside parts.

I've used their power steering version and worked. Also used their tranny stuff and helped. A friend used the tranny additive and it slowed the leak he had.

A bottle might run $15-20.00.....been a while since I bought any.

the labor time for that vehicle is going to be around 3.5 hours so that times the shop labor rate should be a close est, (it's not that uncommon of the frt seal to leak after sitting for a prolonged time. they "dry out" and harding)
