to help your computer start faster, go to your start button, and click on run, then type in msconfig in the search space. Then a window will pop up, if you go to the the last tab that says STARTUP, and disable all the programs that run at startup and then restart your computer, it should help.

Two things might be causing your PC to start slow. First one looks like it's Vista itself. Vista is a much heavier load on your PC than XP. Lots of cool graphic effects and code can be pushing your machine harder than it used to. Hopefully you have a machine less than a year old and at LEAST 1GB of memory. 2GB is recommended (ignore what min specs are for Vista, they are always laughable). The second thing it could be is your hard drive going bad. Hard drives shouldn't be "ticking" as you say. If it sounds different than it used to, your drive might be dying. Weird noises from your hard drive is usually the 1st indication that it is going bad. Try backing up your data and popping a new hard drive in your system to see if it makes any difference to the start time.

hey there..! well if you don't have memory problems, you might have a problem with too many programs starting in your system tray. try this go start > run> enter this "msconfig" and hit OK. this would run a system configuration utility. go to start up tap and disable application you don't use hit OK, computer would restart after that.. good luck..
