Because of the broad market reach Apple execs decided to launch the Iphone with Cingular, at least in the beginning. Look for them to expand their market within a year or two.

AT&T (formerly Cingular) using GSM/Edge and WiFi to start.
Take a look at the web pages below. AT&T has a 5 year exclusive agreement with Apple.

For now, I believe cingular now att and t, has some sort of agreement with apple so they may be the only wireless carrier that has iphone.
