The airport is only about 20 minutes drive from the city, and the train will take about the same. Check out the below website for good and inexpensive hotels. If you want to stay at the airport, Mascot, Arncliffe, Botany and Alexandria are all very close

Sydney airport is only about 10km from the city of Sydney. There are plenty of hotels near the airport including the Hilton, the ParkRoyal and a Holiday Inn. There are cheaper hotels near Central Station which is a short train journey from the airport. A taxi to the city will cost $20 - $30.
