when you took out a contract you had a bit of time to back out of the contract 14-28 days depending on network i assume you are over this period so you are in the contract till it ends unless you want to pay the early termination fee all networks charge this as they have subsidised the cost of your phone when you took out the contract normally top of the range phone free this is your gift for staying with the network for 12-18 months if you don't stay with them then they deem you have to pay for the phone.
Also don't do as advised to just cancel your derict debit as this will mean the network will try and contact you for payment when they can't they will block the phone and put you in the hands of a debt collection agency which will ruin your credit record making it hard to get another mobile contract or a loan and even a mortgage it will have a big impact, it also wont work to say you have moved to bad coverage area or deployed for militry purposes as you provider will just say that they supplied a contract and network for you and have not removed that service and could not have forseen you moving or being deployed there fore you are still responsible for the contract until it ends.
sorry for being the bearer of bad news but hope this gives you all the info you need

You can break a contract - in fact, you probably ALREADY missed an opportunity or two to do this. Watch your billings. ANY change in ANY feature you use must give the customer a remedy. You have to watch the fine print closely... Be patient, and it will pay off. HOWEVER! If you plan to port your number to another carrier you should contact customer service FIRST - even though the new carrier tells you not to. Tell them your reason for wanting to cancel, and make sure they mark those notes in your account. Also, GET THE NAME of the person, and the REP ID. Tell them of your plan to switch but do NOT cancel your contract at that time. They will terminate your account, and you will loose you number if you do. Simply tell them of your plan, and make sure they document it...You may need that later. Your reason will have to be related to the Opt-Out in the fine print....
Good Luck!~

Pay the outrageous fee that the mobile company charges to cancel before the term is up. Next time see if you can get a less-fancy phone without a contract. Verizon has them.

Numer one death of the customer no early termination fee
Move to another part of the country and cannot receive service then they want a copy of your license or utity bill to verify you moved. no early termination.
Military deployment, no early termination.
Other than that they will charge you what ever the contract stated on the early termination fee.
and remember they took your credit card information when you signed on way back when. They will bill you

Well, with Verizon you just tell them you would like to cancel your subscription and then pay a fee. The Fee is something like 175$ per phone with a subtraction of $5 for how ever many months your are close to the end of your contract date.

Check with your provider... Most mobile companies have penalty fees for early termination.

Best thing to do is just stop paying the bill - they will eventually cancel the contract without billing you for the notice period.
