if it is a private company, and you have no contract to stop them - you can be fired for any reason , except race, age, etc.

Of course. But if they do not treat everyone the same way, there may be a discriminatory reason why. If so, then that is an illegal firing. If there is not a discriminatory reason, then they legally can fire someone without prior written notice.

I think people know when they are producing poor work.. so technically they are already on notice.
