I went to Rome in July 2005, so here are a few things I remember:

In Rome expect the best gelato ever. It is really amazing. Do not leave Rome without trying some (or a lot). Personally, I recommend the Nutella gelato.

Rome has a very relaxed atmosphere to it, until you get to touristy areas. Then there tend to be large crowds and it can be very hectic.

The most important thing to do it to take it slowly when you're walking around the city. I was only in Rome for 3 days, so I rushed through a lot. I do not recommend that. Even if it means you miss out on one thing you wanted to see, you will experience a lot more if you take everything in slowly.

Wear comfortable shoes and don't shuffle your feet. There are a lot of cobblestone streets, and my shuffling habit became a problem when I started tripping over the stones.

If you buy a bottle of water in a touristy area, make sure that it is sealed before you pay for it. Sometimes they reuse bottles and refill it with tap water.

Hope some of this helps!

Expect temperatures that can dip down to near or just below freezing at night and on rainy days, and can be moderately warm in the day. (Tourists from colder climates might walk in T-shirts and shorts on sunny days.)

If you are one to go drinking and dancing, be sure to bring your best outfits, as the Italian and Spanish girls are sure to wear their best.

For things to do and see, when staying with your cousin, tell them in advance what kind of thing you like (museums, ancient ruins, shopping or just sitting on a street side cafe seeing the world go past) so they know where to bring you.

For all the other places, buy one good guide book.
I personally like the lonely planet series, but go for the one you like best, some people want pictures, others want church plans and others again like to know the best restaurants or the cheapest hotels.

Fairly nice place, but there's ALOT of annoying foreigners selling stuff near the tourist places, not to mention the crowds.

My favorite spot in Rome is the Trevi Fountain.
