Modern Poet confuses things.
A shy person can't stand to face people.
A loner prefers not to deal with people, finding them irritating and distracting, but has no problem dealing with them when he has to.

The difference between being shy and being a loner is that if you're shy, you just have difficulty talking to people. Being a loner means that you basically just don't talk to a lot of people. Not a lot of friends. Just, alone.

There is a huge difference. A shy person would love to join the crowd but needs to be approached first and then prodded. Once in, the shyness will go away and he'll have fun. A loner insists on being apart from the crowd. If he is in the crowd, it's because he is forced to but will still be outside it mentally.

I suppose you can be shy yet still have a group of friends. Loners may have a measure of shyness. But I think it is more like a feeling of not fitting in with others, self-consciousness. Sometimes it's flipped around: Resent or take the view their individuality is as good as or better than others normalness. Some decide they don't need other people and like their own company better. Some, for any of the above reasons, can become aloof (not trying to fit in, accepting they don't fit in, even preferring to remain in a class of their own)

Loners aren't shy. They can be the life of the party - the center of attention - it is a choice.
