That is actually harder to answer then you think, the first great D-man was Eddie Shore, what made him stand out was, as a D-man, he would score goals in an era of the NHL when d-men didn't score, 4 Hart trophy's and he played for the Boston Bruins, Then there was Doug Harvey 7 Norris trophy,s and the first defenseman to use his skating ability to move the puck into the offensive zone.
Next would be Bobby Orr, 8 Norris, 3 Hart, 1st D-man to win the Art Ross, and accomplished all this with 2 bad knees, and only played 12 years. Lastly, Ray Bourque, holds the record for goals, assist, points by a defenseman, 5 Norris, 13 times named to NHL first team. It would have been intersting to see all 4 play in the same era. But one thing I can answer, of the 4, 3 played for the Bruins, so you can say the Bruins have an eye for HOF Defensemen.

Bobby Orr and it's not even close.
He won the James Morris Memorial Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman 8 years in a row from 1968 to 1975.
He netted 120 points in the 1970 season and is the only defenseman to ever win the Art Ross Trophy as the leagues' leading scorer. 3 straight league MVP's and 2 Conn Smythe's for best playoff performance. 9 time All Star. Rookie of the Year.... the list goes on and on. He was also a ridiculous +124 in 1971.
for good measure:
Voted second greatest hockey player of all time by an expert committee in 1997 by The Hockey News, ahead of Gordie Howe and behind Wayne Gretzky, as well as being named the top defenseman of all time.

Phil Esposito was not a defenseman, he was a great center, but he never played D in his life. Bobby Orr was the greatest Dman ever. With Bourque at #2.

Reggie White was pretty good on defense!! If you are referring to hockey I would say.... drum roll.............. Marty McSorely!!!! J/K Bobby Orr was the best Dman to play the game, but Ray Bourque, Lidstrom, Leetch, Stevens and Coffee were right there on the second tier not far behind.
