Our garbage disposal stopped working after a disposal dishtowel got caught in it. After several attempts to free the jam, water started leaking from the sides of the disposal. We tightened the screws around the sides. Now, the sides are no longer leaking but it's leaking from the reset button! We called the manufacturer and they said "Sorry, get a new one." but I'm not one to give up so easily. Does anyone know how (or if) this can be fixed?

It will be easier to spend $55.00 to buy a new one than to go threw the trouble of fixing the old one.

While it's possible that if you're quite familiar with the internal workings of a garbage disposal unit, you could maybe get it apart and find the internal leaking point and then plug it, the odds are that the fluids that have already leaked in and around the electrical components will soon cause it to just stop. Then you will have gone to all that trouble for nothing. The manufacturer is probably right in this instance. A new unit is most likely the most economical way to go.

It sounds like the seal was damaged at the shaft or the casing was crack, but the bottom line is that if water is coming out of the reset button its just a matter of time before corrosion sets into the electric, best thing is take it apart and see if you can determine where the leak is and make you the choice to replace or fix it. Good Luck

Don't even bother trying to repair it. Disposals are now in the category of a 'throw away' item and not really made to be repaired (unless you buy a high end model). It is past it's useful life so just bite the bullet and replace it with a new one. Can buy disposals these days as cheap as $30 (although I wouldn't recommend the cheapies). Buy a new one with all stainless steel components (blades, chamber, etc).

Instead of replacing it, I'd recommend just removing it and putting a drain line instead. Throw your food in the trash. It's much more sanitary than having rotting food in your drains. You will avoid roaches and bad odors.
