When using a gas oven or stove, it is normal to smell a bit of the gas being released. If someone had a particularly acute sense of smell is there anything to do to remedy or lessen this smell? The smell was strong enough that they were forced to open the windows.

It's normal because there has to be a bit of gas released in order for the pilot to light it. I have a gas stove and I put the overhead vent on high for a moment just as I'm lighting the burner. It helps to draw the smell up and out.

You do smell a little bit of gas but as soon as the flame is ignited the smell is gone. Can't think of anything to lessen the smell of gas, best thing was to open the windows as stated to ensure safety. We have been using gas stove for a long time and never had issues with gas smell, it sounds like the stove isn't functioning right?

Best of luck.

The smell should never be that strong. The only time smell is apparent is when burner won't start quickly or when gas is escaping the flame. I live in a house with a 4 burner gas stove and separate dual ovens and there is never a smell of gas except when one delays in starting. Get the installation checked.

sounds like you have a leak when you turn on the gas. Plumbers test joints with soapy water if there is a leak bubbles will form. Hardware store has products to help seal the leak if you can find it otherwise time for plumber or time for new appliance---would be good idea if possible or speak with landlord!
