Sometimes sexual preferences aren't revealed--they're simply apparent. No matter how private the people try to be. Example: The little girl who talks about her two mommies. Or, the two handsome guys next door who never have girls over. Better yet, the innate feminine demeanor of some gay guys,or,masculine behavior of women. It's too obvious to ignore.

Though I am not against gay people, I thought that 2 guys in college last semester went too far. They would walk up and down the halls hand in hand feeling each other's tush. In class the smaller guy would lie in his larger lover's arms. I felt that situation was a bit much. But who am I?

Even though everyone isn't ready for it, it is a freedom of speech.

Yes. It is a private matter. But in terms of gays, it is often a catch 22 situation. If we mention it, then we are accused of flaunting our sexuality when no one cares. But if we DON'T mention it, when it finally comes out, we have to deal with the problem that everyone is offended that we didn't tell them, and we are accused of being ashamed. Quite frankly, I have had BOTH of these scenarios happen to me. So if the issue ever comes up, I am honest, but if it isn't relevant, I don't bring it up.

I've found that most LGBT people just make it known when it's relevant to the other party. So if they become friends with someone, or at work, or to family, those people sort of have to know, so you can avoid awkward situations, and be yourself around them.

But most LGBT people don't seem to just tell strangers, or wear t-shirts proclaiming it. That's why walking down the street you can't tell. I mean I've never heard of anyone greeting people with "Hi, I'm Bill and I'm gay."

So it's private when needed, public when needed. All depends on who needs to know and why.

It is a private matter, but if more people revealed what their preference is, the more it would be accepted

I state my preference here in the LGBT section of YA because it is the topic of discussion. In my personal life I only tell people who ask me. You would be amazed at the number of times people ask me. I am "straight acting" but people ask all the time. When they ask I tell them.
I think it is OK for people to be in the closet I don't put them down for it. I understand it is a problem in many workplaces and can be dangerous so if someone is closeted that is OK with me.

The problem is everyone assumes you are straight unless you say something. I do not want to be set up on a date with a man. And I would like to walk down the street hand in hand with my partner.
Straight people get to have public displays of affection why not us?

Sure but don't you think it's kind of hard to walk down the street holding hands with the same sex without reveling their preference. or do you think they shouldn't do that either? Maybe we should walk around with blindfolds on our eyes and pretend that we don't see it. It's a part of life, gay people are people too and have every right to flaunt it in your face just like straight people. If you want to pretend that gay people don't exist don't go looking for them.

Yes it is very much a private matter, we all have the right to reveal what we feel the need to reveal and to keep private what we choose as private.

It's no one's business but our own!

Sexual preference, as well as anything else personal, is a very private thing.
